Welcome to the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies
The Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies is an inter- and transdisciplinary research college at the University of Bayreuth. It started its research on the topic of “Future Africa – Visions in Time” on the 1st of October, 2012. The project has been expanded and extended till the end of 2018 under the theme “Future Africa and Beyond – Visions in Time”.
Emerging from the University of Bayreuth’s prominent focus on African Studies (at the Institute of African Studies), the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies provides a framework for ground-breaking research projects which connect to debates across various fields. It allows research into Africa and the African Diasporas to be put into academic discourse with other research facilities, thereby, opening up new perspectives even across the boundaries of regional (Area) studies.
The Academy’s focus is on Cultural and Social Studies, but it is also open to other fields of study. Its research findings, as well as its debates concerning major current issues have profound impacts on culture, education, the general public, and politics. The primary focus of the Bayreuth Academy during its first phase (2012 – 2016) is the overall project “Future Africa – Visions in Time,” which is further divided into five sub-projects. The extension phase focusses on the diaspora: “Future Africa and beyond – Visions in Time”.
The project is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) along the lines of its funding priority “Stärkung und Weiterentwicklung der Regionalstudien (area studies)”.
