Personal information: Daniel Mains’ research and writing explores the intersection between culture and economics in urban Africa.  He is the author of Hope is Cut: Youth, Unemployment, and the Future in Urban Ethiopia (2012).  Hope is Cut examines how young men in urban Ethiopia negotiate the gap between their desires for the future and economic realities.  Dr. Mains was a Fulbright Fellow in Hawassa, Ethiopia (2013 – 2014) and a Humboldt Fellow in Berlin, Germany (2017 - 2018). He is currently finishing a book manuscript on the politics of infrastructure that is tentatively titled Under Construction: Technologies of Development in Urban Ethiopia.

At the Academy, he took part in the workshop "Waiting in Africa" of the postdoc working group "Waiting for Futures".
